Who Should Get a Comprehensive Eye Exam?
Everyone! Even if your vision feels fine, regular eye exams can detect issues before symptoms appear—including serious conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease.
A comprehensive eye exam is especially important if you:
Haven't had an eye exam in over a year
Experience blurry vision, eye strain, or frequent headaches
Have trouble seeing at night or while driving
Work on screens for extended periods
Wear glasses or contact lenses
Have a family history of eye disease (glaucoma, macular degeneration, etc.)
Have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other health conditions that affect the eyes
Are over 40 (when age-related vision changes often begin)
Are a child starting school (vision problems can affect learning)
At Edge Optics, we recommend annual exams for most patients—because your vision and eye health can change quickly, and early detection is key.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I schedule an eye examination?
It is generally recommended to schedule an eye examination every 12 months. Depending on your age, health, and vision needs this could be sooner. For children, more frequent exams may be necessary to monitor changes in vision and ensure proper development, making us a trusted choice for pediatric eye care, including myopia control in Fort Collins, and if you're searching for a kids eye doctor. If you have existing eye conditions or wear contact lenses, your optometrist may suggest more regular visits. Regular eye health checks help catch any potential issues early and ensure your prescription is up to date, contributing to better overall eye health.
What does a comprehensive eye exam include?
At Edge Optics, your eye exam includes a full health screening, vision testing, prescription check, and optional retinal imaging and dry eye testing on new, advanced machinery. Our Fort Collins optometrists take the time to explain everything clearly. During your eye exam at Edge Optics, you can expect a thorough discussion of your results with your optometrist. They will explain any findings, recommend treatment options if necessary, and provide you with a new prescription if needed. If you require new eyewear, our team will assist you in selecting frames and lenses that suit your needs. Additionally, you may receive follow-up instructions regarding eye care or future appointments, ensuring you maintain optimal eye health.
Can I get glasses or contacts after my exam?
Absolutely. Once your prescription is finalized, our in-house eyewear specialists can help you choose frames or contact lenses that match your needs and style. Edge Optics provides a wide range of eyewear options to suit various needs and preferences. This includes single-vision glasses, bifocals, and progressive lenses for those who require multifocal eyeglass prescriptions. What should I bring to my eye examination?
When visiting Edge Optics for your eye examination, it's important to bring a few key items. First, bring your current eyewear, including glasses and contact lenses, as this helps the optometrist assess your vision needs accurately. If you have any medical records related to your eye health or prescriptions from other providers, bring those as well. Additionally, a list of any medications you are currently taking can be helpful. Lastly, don’t forget to bring your insurance or health insurance information if applicable.
What are exams like for contact lens wearers?
It's essential to have a proper contact lens exam and fitting to ensure comfort and optimal vision. During your exam, our optometrists will assess your eye shape and prescription to recommend the best type of contact lenses for you. We also offer the convenience of same day contact lenses for many prescriptions. Additionally, maintaining proper hygiene and following a regular cleaning routine is crucial to prevent infections.
